What is Raksha Bandhan?

Raksha Bandhan or Janai Purnima is dedicated festival for sibling love celebrated by Hindu Community around the world. Raksha Bandhan sometimes also called Rakhi carries an important meaning when it comes to the relationship between sister and brother. Raksha Bandhan is observed in Hindu community, especially India and Nepal on last day of the Hindu lunar calendar. It basically falls in the month of August.

In 2020, Raksha Bandhan is on 3rs August 2020. Although Raksha Bandhan is observed on the last day of the Hindu Lunar Calendar month of Shravana, the dates may vary each year.

Raksha Bandhan/Janai Purnima in Nepal

In Nepal, Raksha Bandhan is also called Janai Purnima or Janai Ferne Din. This festival is considered as the festival of “Thread” and “Tie”. Basically, the festival is made up of two words Raksha and Bandhan. Raksha means “Protection” and Bandhan means “to tie”.

On this day, Brahmins and Chettri men change their “Janai”. That is why this festival is also known as Janai Purnima.

“येन बद्धो वलीराजा दानवेन्द्रो महावलस् ।
तेन त्वां प्रतिबध्नामि रक्षे मा चल मा चल ।।”

“जुन रक्षा (काँचो धागो)ले दानवहरुको महान राजा वलिलाई बाँधिएको थियो, म तिमीलाई त्यहि धागोले बाँध्दछु, यो रक्षा बन्धनले तिम्रो सदैव रक्षागर्नेछ ।”

Sisters tie a thread in her brother’s right hand wishing them for good luck, health, and prosperity. This festival is meant to celebrate any type of brother-sister relationship between men and women who may not be biologically related. On this day, a special food called “Quanti [क्वाँटी] ” is served.  Quanti is a thick stew of sprouting kidney beans, black-eyed peas, chickpeas, soybeans, mung bean, green bean, black bean, and white beans. The way of cooking varies from community to community. However, quanti is considered a very healthy and delicious food item.
