Prabal Gurung is a New York Based Nepali fashion designer, Social Activist, and Model. He is very famous for his world-class designs. People wearing his designs include dignitaries like the former First Lady of the US Michelle Obama, Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, prominent TV personality Oprah Winfrey, and Bollywood divas such as Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and others.
Gurung fuses an old world-technique with cutting-edge modernity to create a daring yet timeless collection. His architectural approach to each piece makes him more than just a designer. He is an artist whose mission is to bring his unique vision to the forefront of the industry and lease an indelible mark on the work of fashion.
His transcontinental crossings provided the perfect base for unique experiences in the industry’s most eclectic fashion meccas. In 1999, after seven years of trotting the globe, Gurung moved to New York City. He began his career in New York interning for Donna Karen while attending the city’s prestigious Parsons School of Design. In his first year, he was awarded the “Best Designer” title at the annual Parsons/Fit design competition. Soon after, he garnered rave reviews for his work in design from media outlets such as CBS News, Paper Magazine, and The New York Times.

Early Age and Education
Gurung was born in Singapore and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal. He studied at St. Xavier’s School which was one of the most reputed Jesuit Catholic schools in his city and finished his schooling from there.
After beginning his design career in New Delhi he moved to New York to finish his studies at Parsons The New School for Design. Upon graduating, Gurung spent two years with Cynthia Rowley’s design and production teams. Soon after, he was appointed design director at the iconic Bill Blass, a post he held for five years until launching his own collection, PRABAL GURUNG.

A focus on quality and innovation has placed Gurung at the forefront of American fashion with designs worn by leading ladies including First Lady Michelle Obama and The Duchess of Cambridge, to name a few.Gurung was the official 2013 designer collaborator for Target, launched a product collaboration with MAC Cosmetics in 2014, collaborated on a collection with TOMS to support Shikshya Foundation Nepal in 2016 and launched a capsule with Lane Bryant in 2017.

Prabal Gurung’s notable accolades include the 2010 Ecco Domani Fashion Fund Award, 2010 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund runner up, USA Network’s Character Approved Award recipient in 2011, named goodwill ambassador of Maiti Nepal, a finalist of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award, recipient of the 2011 CFDA Swarovski Award for Womenswear and was honored in 2015 with the inaugural Creativity Award from The Drawing Center.
He was also chosen by prominent fashion editors, retailers, designers, and business people for the CFDA Fashion Incubator for 2010-2012.
